  • Anti-capitalist group that denounces "corporate greed" as the source of most societal ills
  • Supports Palestinian "right of return"

Left Turn is an organization of self-proclaimed "anti-capitalists, radical feminists, anti-racists, and anti-imperialists" united in the belief that
"corporate greed is the driving force behind all of society's problems." Seeking to "radically transform" the United States into a socialist nation, the group is currently "involved in [the] struggles against globalization, imperialism and war" in such places as Israel, Iraq and Venezuela. Based in New York, Left Turn has key officials stationed in a half-dozen additional major American cities.

"The human misery that corporate greed leaves in its wake," says the Left Turn website, "is not only caused by the destructive policies of the IMF, World Trade Organization, and the World Bank. These bodies were created to maintain the smooth functioning of capitalism -- a system that puts profit before people's needs and the health of the planet. The continuation of this destructive system is defended by the state, which uses the police and army to attack any opposition to its inhumane policies. Ultimately, Left Turn believes that justice can only be achieved through the revolutionary reconstruction of society."

Bilal El-Amine is the Editor of this organization's in-house publication, Left Turn Magazine. In September 2001, El-Amine was a contact for Global Justice Intifada, a coalition of leftist groups that was created, in part, to celebrate the anniversary of the September 2000 launching of the Al Aqsa Intifada against Israel. El-Amine is also a member of the Palestine Activist Forum of New York, a group that has featured Hamas slogans at its rallies; he is a founding member of Stop U.S. Tax-funded Aid to Israel Now (SUSTAIN); and he is affiliated with Al-Awda, an Islamist organization that advocates 7 million Palestinians' "right of return" to Israel, a migration that would render Jews a permanent minority in their homeland. Left Turn Magazine features the writings of Sami Al-Arian, Juan Cole, Phyllis Bennis, Ora Wise, Stan Goff, and Rania Masri, among many others.

In the post-9/11 era, Left Turn has taken a strong stand against the Patriot Act and America's military incursions into Afghanistan and Iraq. A member organization of the United for Peace and Justice anti-war coalition, Left Turn views the U.S. war on terror as little more than a fabricated exercise in "a
nti-Arabism and Islamophobia" that allows "the U.S. war machine" to use "racism and fear as a way to continue to attack, occupy and exploit, especially in the Arab and Muslim world."
