The Lear Family Foundation (LFF) was established in 1997 by Norman Lear, the longtime television producer, screenwriter, political activist, and philanthropist who created People for the American Way and served as board president of the American Civil Liberties Foundation of Southern California for more than twenty years. Through his Foundation, Lear supports many leftist organizations that work in the areas of “civil liberties, education, the environment, health, youth initiatives, civic activism, media and the arts.” At one time, LFF was a donor-advised fund housed at the headquarters of the Proteus Fund, but it is no longer situated there.

Noteworthy recipients of LFF grants include: the American Civil Liberties Union; Americans for Peace Now; the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities; the Children’s Defense Fund; the Earth Day Network; the Economic Policy Institute; the Environmental Media Association; Free Press; Friends of the Earth; Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD); Human Rights Watch; Media Matters for America; the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL); the Natural Resources Defense Council; the New America Foundation; People for the American Way; Planned Parenthood; the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition; the Rainforest Alliance; Rock the Vote; the Tides Center and the Tides Foundation; and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
