Democratic Justice Fund (DJF)

organization

Overview

  • Civil liberties project of the Tides Foundation and George Soros’s Open Society Institute
  • Anti-Israel, anti-Patriot Act

A joint project of the Tides Foundation and George Soros‘s Open Society Institute, the Democratic Justice Fund (DJF) states that it seeks to “[protect] the civil liberties of all Americans; support immigrant rights with a particular focus on strengthening the capacity of Arab, Muslim, South Asian and Sikh organizations; and [promote] alternative media voices that can frame the complex political, social and economic history informing today’s international crisis and [expand] their influence on mainstream media.” DJF opposes the Patriot Act and most efforts to restrict or regulate immigration into the United States — particularly from countries designated by the State Department as “terrorist nations.”

DJF is an outgrowth of the Tides Foundation’s 9/11 Fund, which ostensibly was established to give financial assistance to communities harmed by the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. However, much of the money from the 9/11 Fund was actually funneled into the coffers of organizations like the New York Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project, Islamic Networks, the Council for American-Islamic Relations, and the National Lawyers Guild.
