Coalition for Peace in the Middle East (CPME)

Overview

* Anti-war group
* Condemns the governments of U.S. and Israel

Founded in 1990, the Coalition for Peace in the Middle East (CPME) is an anti-war network with numerous chapters across the United States — most prominently in Los Angeles (California) and Youngstown (Ohio). The Coalition’s original mission was to pressure the United States to reject the use of military force as a means of driving Iraq’s invading army out of Kuwait in 1991. CPME’s slogans at the time were “Sanctions, not War” and “Let the Sanctions Work.” CPME further called for an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem — favoring “a two-state solution … and recognition of the PLO as the representative of the Palestinian people.” Anti-war and anti-Israel campaigns remain foremost on CPME’s agenda to this day.

On March 30, 2002, CPME co-sponsored a Washington, DC rally exhorting Israel to “End the Occupation, End the Violence.” CPME’s co-sponsors for this event included: Al-Awda; the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee; the American Friends Service Committee; the American Muslim Council; American Muslims for Global Peace and Justice; American Muslims for Jerusalem; Christian Peacemakers Teams; the Council on American-Islamic Relations; the Council for the National Interest; the International Action Center; the International Socialist Organization; the Islamic Association for Palestine; Jews Against the Occupation; the Muslim American Society; the Muslim Public Affairs Council; the Muslim Students Association of the U.S. and Canada; Partners for Peace; Pax Christi USA; Peace Action; Peace and Freedom; Queers For Racial & Economic Justice; Solidarity USA; and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

CPME has also worked closely with such groups as Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador; the Democratic Socialists of America; Fellowship of Reconciliation; the Gray Panthers; the International Jewish Peace Union; the Palestine Solidarity Committee; and Pledge of Resistance.
