Nation Books (NB)

Overview

* A joint publishing “venture” by the non-profit The Nation Institute and the for-profit leftwing Thunder’s Mouth Press
* Many Nation Books authors are writers and editors of _The Nation_, with which The Nation Institute is associated

Nation Books is a book publishing enterprise launched in 2001 as “a co-publishing venture of The Nation Institute and Thunder’s Mouth Press, an imprint of Avalon Publishing Group/PGW,” according to the Institute’s website.

“The mission of Nation Books,” this website says, “is to help fill the void in commercial publishing with arresting new titles on the social and cultural forces that shape our lives by the best writers at work today. The imprint publishes new works on politics, human rights, feminism, race, gay and lesbian issues, history, art and culture, popular science and the environment — books that will ruffle feathers and unsettle perceived wisdom.”

Carl Bromley is Editor of this venture, and its Co-Publishers are Neil Ortenberg and Hamilton Fish V, the latter being President of The Nation Institute’s Board of Trustees. In April 2004 Avalon Publishing Group that it had named John Oakes as Publisher of both Thunder’s Mouth Press and Nation Books.

An independent book publishing group, Avalon was established in 1994. In New York City it does business as Carroll & Graf Publishers. It published Ambassador Joseph Wilson‘s 2004 book about how the Bush administration had “outed” his wife as an employee of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Avalon imprint Thunder’s Mouth Press is publisher of The I Hate Republicans Reader and The I Hate George W. Bush Reader.
