In May 2015, fourteen U.S. senators signed a letter urging President Barack Obama to allow 65,000 people from war-torn, terrorism-ravaged Syria into the United States as refugees, despite the fact that it was impossible to thoroughly vet them. The signatories were Al Franken, Sherrod Brown, Chris Coons, Dick Durbin, Dianne Feinstein, Mazie Hirono, Tim Kaine, Amy Klobuchar, Patrick Leahy, Ed Markey, Robert Menendez, Patty Murray, Jeanne Shaheen, and Sheldon Whitehouse.
