The Hawaii Reporter describes Neil Abercrombie as having been “a bona fide Marxist hippie” during the 1960s.
A key supporter of Abercrombie’s 1990 congressional campaign was the Council for a Livable World.
There is evidence suggesting that as of 1990, Abercrombie was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
In 2006 Abercrombie and fellow Congressional Progressive Caucus member Dennis Kucinich spoke at a DSA Political Action Committee event in Washington, in support of the self-avowed socialist Bernie Sanders.
On December 22, 2009, Abercrombie was one of 33 U.S. Representatives who signed a letter to Hillary Clinton, calling on the Secretary of State to pressure the Israeli government to end its ban on Palestinian student travel from Gaza to the West Bank, and urging an “increase” in “U.S. funding for Palestinian universities and educational programs in Gaza and the West Bank.”
Abercrombie’s wife, Dr. Nancie Caraway, is a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
