Additional Information on Kathy Kelly
* Kathy Kelly was arrested on the following occasions:
- In 1988 Kelly was arrested and sentenced to one year in prison, for having planted corn on nuclear missile silo sites near Kansas City, Missouri.
- In November 2003, Kelly was one of 44 activists who crossed illegally into the Fort Benning U.S. Army base as part of the annual School of the Americas Watch vigil calling for the closure of that base; she served three months in federal prison in 2004 as a result.
- In April 2009, Kelly and fourteen fellow activists were arrested for criminal trespass when they entered Creech Air Force Base (in Nevada) to distribute leaflets protesting unmanned U.S. drone attacks in Pakistan.
- In January 2010, Kelly was arrested in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol building while taking part in a mock funeral, organized by Witness Against Torture, in memory of three Islamic prisoners who were recently alleged to have been tortured to death in the Guantanamo Bay detention center.
- On April 22, 2011, Kelly was one of 37 protesters arrested at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base in Syracuse, New York, in a protest against drone warfare.
- In April 2014, Kelly was arrested at Beale Air Force Base in California while protesting against drone warfare.
- In June 2014, Kelly and another activist entered Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri requesting to meet with the base commander to protest America’s use of drone warfare. Kelly was arrested and subsequently stood trial for trespassing. In late February 2015 she began serving a three-month sentence in federal prison.
* Kelly views America as an aggressive, overly militaristic nation. In 2003 she said: “Since World War II, we’ve gone through hot war after hot war after hot war. It’s Korea, Vietnam, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq again and I haven’t named them all.”
* In April 2017, Kelly helped organize — and then participated in — a six-day “Fast for Yemen Because Yemen Is Starving.” The fast was held in New York City, near the United Nations headquarters.
* Over the course of her activist career, Kelly has received awards and honors from such organizations as Pax Christi USA, Office of the Americas, International Fellowship of Reconciliation, the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the American Friends Service Committee, the War Resisters League, and Veterans For Peace. She aslo has received awards named after Daniel Berrigan and Noam Chomsky.
