In August 2017, We the People Rising (WPR) – a Claremont, California-based activist group advocating stricter enforcement of U.S. immigration laws – took exception to the fact that on a wall of Correa’s congressional office in Santa Ana was a student painting that depicted the Statue of Liberty wearing a Muslim hijab. The painting was on display along with the work of other finalists in a student art competition which Correa had held.
