Additional Information on Elijah Cummings

Overview

* In 2004 in Washington, DC, Elijah Cummings participated in a “coronation” ceremony honoring the spiritual leader Sun Myung Moon. In a speech he delivered after the awards had been presented, Moon declared: “I am God’s ambassador, sent to earth with His full authority. I am sent to accomplish His command to save the world’s six billion people, restoring them to Heaven with the original goodness in which they were created.”

* In 2007, Cummings was one of 90 Members of Congress who signed an open letter to President George W. Bush, stating: “We will only support appropriating funds for U.S. military operations in Iraq during Fiscal Year 2008 and beyond for the protection and safe redeployment of all our troops out of Iraq before you leave office.” The letter was initiated by the Peace Pledge Coalition, an alliance led by such notables as Medea Benjamin, Bill Fletcher, Kevin Zeese, and representatives of the Progressive Democrats of America, Democrats.com, AfterDowningStreet.org, Velvet Revolution, and the Backbone Campaign.

* When the U.S. Postal Service decided in 2013 to eliminate Saturday mail delivery and cut some 25 to 30 thousand employees from its payroll, Cummings lamented that the move would disproportionally harm minority groups. Asserting that because Asians, African-Americans, and Hispanics “comprise about 40 percent of the Postal Service employees,” the congressman reasoned that “if they were to lose that 30,000 jobs, easily 40 percent of them” would be members of those groups.
