Supporters of the Islamic League (SIL)

Overview

* Lebanese Islamist group

Supporters of the Islamic League(Ansar al-‘Usba al-Islamiya) is a small Lebanese Islamist group consisting of almost 200 members. It is headed by a Palestinian named Ahmad as-Sa’di (also known as Abu Muhjin), formerly of the Islamic Association. Identifying its objective as the liberation of Palestine and the Muslim community, Supporters of the Islamic League first came to public attention in August 1995 with the assassination of Nizar al-Halabi of the moderate Lebanese religious sect and poltical party Al-Ahbash. Despite evidence of Abu Muhjin’s involvement in the assassination (he was suspected of having committed several political assassinations), Lebanese authorities have not been able to locate him.
