In March 2011, the American National Elections Studies, a survey series that was established by the National Science Foundation in 1977, issued a report that focused on how various types of people, in interviews that were conducted prior to the 2020 U.S. presidential election, answered the following question: “How much do you feel it is justified for people to use violence to pursue their political goals in this country?” The 8,280 respondents who participated in the study could answer with: “Not at all,” “A little,” “A moderate amount,” “A lot,” or “A great deal.”

The researchers found that: (a) respondents who self-identified as either “conservative” or “very conservative” were far less likely to approve of violence for political purposes, than were people who identified as either “liberal” or “very liberal”; (b) Republicans were less accepting of the use of violence for political gains than were Democrats and independents; and (c) whites were less likely to support such violence than were Asians, Hispanics, and blacks.
