U.N. Waits on China’s Permission to Investigate Uyghur Slavery

March 30, 2021

Breitbart News reports that the United Nations will not undertake to verify reports that Muslim Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities are being persecuted in China until the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) gives permission.

The treatment of Uyghurs in China’s Xinjiang province is reported to include forced labor camps, physical and sexual abuse, and other human rights violations. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said last month that such reports necessitate a thorough and independent assessment — but conditional on China’s approval.

The communist regime denies any mistreatment. “The purpose of this visit should be to promote interaction and cooperation, and not to carry out so-called investigation on the presumption of guilt,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters in Beijing on Monday.

“I hope that they will reach an agreement soon and that the human rights commissioner will be able to visit China without restrictions or limitations,” said U.N. secretary-general Antonio Guterres on Sunday.

If the United States were guilty of such human rights abuses instead of China, the United Nations — which exists largely just to condemn Israel and America, and to legitimize notorious human rights abusers — would be denouncing the U.S. instead of waiting in cowed patience for approval to investigate.
