Steyer to Voters: ‘I Don’t Want to Be President’

November 25, 2019

Billionaire presidential candidate Tom Steyer told a muted audience in Northwood, Iowa, on Monday that he doesn’t “want to be president.”

“I know this is going to sound a little strange, kind of,” Steyer said in response to a woman who pointed out that his odds of becoming the Democrat nominee are very low. “I don’t want to be president. But I do want to do things as president.” This less-than-rousing admission earned a confused silence from the crowd.

“You know, I am running because I thought — until this week, I was the last person to get in,” he continued. “And I got in because I thought, ‘My God, no one’s going to tell the truth to the American people. And we’re not going to actually deal with the critical issues in front of us, and we have to…’ [I]f I’m not the Democratic candidate, I will be supporting the Democratic candidate. Full bore. Any one of those people on that [debate] stage is a thousand times better than Mr. Trump or any of the Republicans.”

But no one on that stage can beat Mr. Trump.
