Feminist icon Gloria Steinem told Planned Parenthood advocates Wednesday that “there is no democracy” without a woman’s right to choose an abortion.
Speaking at Planned Parenthood of Southern New England’s spring luncheon in Stamford, Connecticut, Steinem condemned the Trump administration for making a clear distinction between family planning and abortion with its rule governing Title X family planning grants. The new regulation prohibits the use of the funds to “perform, promote, refer for, or support abortion as a method of family planning.”
“Our ability, men and women, to make decisions over our own bodies is the first step of democracy,” Steinem said. “There is no democracy without that.”
