On the red carpet for actor Denzel Washington’s AFI Lifetime Achievement tribute Thursday, film director Spike Lee expressed his support for a boycott of Hollywood productions in Georgia over a state law there that would ban abortions upon the earliest detection of a fetal heartbeat.
“They got to shut it down, you know?” Lee stated. “I’m sorry — I’m not sorry — but I know it’s going to affect people’s livelihood, but that’s how things change.
“There were black bus drivers in Montgomery and they were affected by the boycott, but so be it,” he added, referring to the Civil Rights Movement-era protest against racially segregated seating on the public transit system in Montgomery, Alabama.
