Lee’s new documentary New York Epicenters: 9/11 – 2021 1/2, a four-parter that premiered Sunday, examines what New York City has been through over the last 20 years, from 9/11 to the COVID pandemic. In the final chapter, Lee tries to resuscitate the anti-science nonsense that fire can’t melt steel, giving credence to the tired conspiracy that the U.S. government orchestrated the 9/11 collapse of the World Trade Center.
“I mean, I got questions, and I hope that maybe the legacy of this documentary is that Congress holds a hearing, a congressional hearing, about 9/11,” Lee told the Daily Mail. “The amount of heat that it takes to make steel melt, that temperature’s not reached. And then the juxtaposition of the way Building 7 fell to the ground — when you put it next to other building collapses that were demolitions, it’s like you’re looking at the same thing.
“My approach is to put the information in the movie and let people decide for themselves. I respect the intelligence of the audience,” Lee added. Asked why he believes in 9/11 conspiracies but not in purported conspiracy theories about vaccines or the 2020 election, Lee gave the non-reply, “People are going to think what they think, regardless.”
The reason he doesn’t subscribe to those other theories is that they legitimately challenge left-wing dogma and power.
