Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) received $5.9 million from about 223,000 donors in the first 24 hours after declaring his candidacy for the White House.
The Democratic Socialist has raised $6 million altogether, with small pledges similar to the average donation of $27 from his previous bid in 2016. The fundraising rose from the $4 million he had amassed as of Feb. 19, the day he announced.
Sanders’ sum eclipsed that of fellow presidential hopeful Sen. Kamala Harris, whose initial $1.5 million from about 38,000 donors had been the biggest first-day money haul so far.
