Sanders Admits Taxing ‘the Rich’ Won’t Be Enough

May 29, 2019

At a campaign stop in New Hampshire, democratic socialist Bernie Sanders admitted that taxing the rich would not be enough to fund his Medicare for All proposal, and that “ordinary people” would see “an increase in income tax” to foot the bill.

After stating that he would raise payroll taxes on employers as well as taxes on high-income earners, Sanders assured his audience it would save them money.

“It would cost you and ordinary Americans a lot less than you are currently spending on average,” Sanders said. “What it will probably end up looking like is a payroll tax on employers, an increase in income tax in a progressive way for ordinary people — with a significant deductible for low-income people who pay nothing.”
