Appearing Thursday on MSNBC, Rep. Steve Cohen said President Trump’s rally in Greenville, North Carolina on Wednesday, in which some Trump supporters chanted to send radical Rep. Ilhan Omar back to her native Somalia, reminded him of Nazi Germany.
“It was more reminiscent of Germany during the beginnings of the Hitler regime. People yelling send her back was un-American,” Cohen said. “I fear for the congressmen’s safety. I fear for the safety of other Congresspeople, Ilhan in particular, and the other three ladies [Omar’s freshman Rep. cohorts Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley]. The atmosphere that Trump is creating is dangerous to American citizens and that’s abhorrent.”
Asked if evoking Hitler and Nazism didn’t make him as responsible for heated rhetoric as anybody else, Cohen stood by the comparison, in line with the hyperbolic Democrat narrative that Trump is the new Hitler leading a new white nationalist movement.
