Locked in a close Senate race with Republican opponent Martha McSally in Arizona, Democrat Kyrsten Sinema is trying to shed her radical roots and cultivate a more moderate image in the red state
For example, she has said that ICE holds an “important function” even as progressives call for abolishing the department. But in 2006 she was a Ralph Nader-supporting, pink tutu-wearing Iraq War protester who referred to herself as a “Prada socialist.” She ran a state legislative race in 2002 on the Green Party ticket.
Sinema also once referred to her state as the “meth lab of democracy” and advised Democrat activists to “stop your state from becoming Arizona.”
