Pope: Christians Shouldn’t Fear Looking Like Communists

February 20, 2019

Pope Francis said Monday that Christians should not hold back from our social obligations for fear that the Church will end up “looking like the communist party.”

In his homily at morning Mass at the Santa Marta residence in the Vatican, Francis reminded his audience that we are all responsible for the poor and needy, and that we should not be timid about sharing our wealth.

“We ease our conscience a little by giving alms, as long as it does not hurt too much,” he said, because we fear that “with these social things the Church ends up looking like the communist party and this bothers us. Fine, but it was the Lord who said, ‘Where is your brother?’ Not the party, the Lord.”
