In an interview with La Stampa Friday, Pope Francis said Europeans should put globalization and European “unity” ahead of the interests of their own countries.
“The thinking must be ‘Europe first, then each one of us,’” the pope said. “‘Each one of us’ is not secondary, it is important, but Europe counts more.” He added, “Never forget that ‘the whole is greater than the parts.’ Globalization, unity, should not be conceived as a sphere, but as a polyhedron: each people retains its identity in unity with others.”
The pope went on to hysterically compare the speeches of Italy’s popular interior minister Matteo Salvini, who has spearheaded an “Italians first” movement called “sovereignism,” to those of Hitler.
“I am concerned because we hear speeches that resemble those of Hitler in 1934. ‘Us first, We…We…’ These are frightening thoughts,” said Francis. “Sovereignism is an exaggeration that always ends badly: it leads to war… That suffix ‘ism’ is never good,” added the Pope, a proponent of socialism and globalism.
