In an interview published Tuesday by Vatican News, Pope Francis compared President Trump’s border wall to the Berlin Wall built in 1961 to keep East Germans from escaping into West Berlin.
“I do not know what is going on with this new culture that defends territories by building a wall,” the pope told a Mexican reporter, referring not only to the wall between the U.S. and Mexico but of “all the barriers that exist.” “We already dealt with one, the one in Berlin, which brought us enough headaches and enough suffering.”
“And separating kids from their parents [at the border] goes against the natural law… It falls into the greatest cruelty,” he added. “To defend what? The territory or the economy of the country or who knows what, right?”
