Thursday in a news conference on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called President Trump’s merit-based immigration plan “condescending” to families.
“We have to, I believe, come to comprehensive immigration reform,” Pelosi said. “I think the president knows that. I know on the Republican side of the aisle, there is a recognition that we have to have comprehensive immigration reform.
“But I want to just say something about the word they used, ‘merit.’ It is really a condescending word. Are they saying family is without merit? Are they saying most of the people that come to the United States in the history of our country are without merit because they don’t have an engineering degree?”
