White House hopeful Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke has invited three athletes who protested the national anthem as guests to the Democrat debate on Tuesday.
Inspired by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, football players Kabbalah Richards, Michael Lynn III, Matthew Abdullah and RoJe Williams at Lansing Catholic High School in Michigan were benched for taking a knee during the anthem in 2017, creating a local controversy. Three will attend the debate, as Richards is at college.
O’Rourke told the press that the athletes “have served their community in one of the most American ways possible.” At a 2018 campaign event in Texas, O’Rourke had said, “I can think of nothing more American than to peacefully stand up or take a knee for your rights anytime, anywhere or anyplace.”
The fact that he can’t think of anything more American than protesting the national anthem speaks volumes about O’Rourke and the Democrat Party.
