Obama Slams Trump in Commencement Address

May 18, 2020

Speaking online to recognize historic black college and university graduates on Saturday, former President Barack Obama said in a commencement speech that current leaders “aren’t even pretending to be in charge” during the coronavirus pandemic.

“More than anything this pandemic has fully finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing. A lot of them aren’t even pretending to be in charge,” he said, without naming President Trump specifically.

“Doing what feels good, what’s convenient, what’s easy, that’s what little kids think,” Obama added. “Unfortunately, a lot of so-called grownups, including some with fancy titles and important jobs, still feel that way, which is why things are so screwed up.”

“Look, he was an incompetent president, that’s all I can say,” Trump told reporters in response to Obama’s cynical, politically-charged address after returning to the White House from Camp David. “Grossly incompetent.” That’s putting it politely.
