NY Times Ends Political Cartoons After Anti-Semitism Scandal

June 11, 2019

In the wake of the publication in April of an anti-Semitic caricature of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the international edition of the New York Times has ceased to feature editorial cartoons.

The cartoon, drawn by Portuguese artist António Moreira Antunesas and published during Passover, depicted Netanyahu as a dog wearing a Star of David collar and leading a blind President Trump in a Jewish skullcap. The paper eventually acknowledged that “it was an error of judgment to publish it” and pulled the cartoon, but did not apologize.

It is unclear whether this cartoon had anything to do with the decision to stop running political cartoons, since editor James Bennet explained that the Times had planned for a year to do so.
