MSNBC’s Matthews Facing Calls to Resign After Nazi Comment

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews is facing calls to resign after comparing White House hopeful Bernie Sanders’ debate victory in Nevada to the Nazi invasion of France.

“I was reading last night about the fall of France in the summer of 1940,” Matthews had said during MSNBC’s coverage of the debate on Saturday. “And the general, Reynaud, calls up Churchill and says, ‘It’s over.’ And Churchill says, ‘How can that be? You’ve got the greatest army in Europe. How can it be over?’ He said, ‘It’s over.’”

Critics of Matthews expressed their outrage on social media, especially since Sanders is Jewish and had relatives killed in the Holocaust. “Chris Matthews just compared Bernie Sanders, a Jewish man whose relatives were killed by the Nazis, to the Nazi army. He should be fired immediately,” one tweeted. “Get this lunatic off the air,” wrote another.

Matthews also admitted to pessimism that Sanders, seemingly on his way to earning the Democrat nomination, could beat President Trump in the general election in November.
