Matthews Worried Dems Are Too Far Left to Win in 2020

April 3, 2019

Tuesday on MSNBC’s Hardball, host Chris Matthews expressed concern that the Democrat Party’s drift to the far-left could cost them the 2020 presidential election.

“What’s hard is to identify a leading candidate that is resisting the move to the left,” Matthews said. “Very hard because all seem determined to hold their own among those young, strongly progressive, often minority voters expected to make up the voting base in the early states.” He went on to remind voters of the 1972 presidential election between incumbent President Nixon and Democrat challenger George McGovern. Nixon won in a landslide, taking 49 states and 60% of the popular vote.

“Bottom line,” he concluded, “going into the Democratic primaries is not the same as going to the country.”
