Friday on HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher said, while discussing the withdrawal chaos in Afghanistan, that he never understands why “liberals,” especially those in the United States, are “not more apoplectic about the way women” are treated in much of the world, especially in the Middle East.
“[T]he Taliban says, the women will have all their rights within the limits of Islam, which is a great way of saying none,” Maher quipped. “I never understand why the liberals, especially in this country, are not — they’re not more apoplectic about the way women, the feminists, are treated in so much of the world, especially this part of the world.”
The reason is simple, but not for a typically left-leaning thinker like Maher and his audience. Progressives (not liberals; these days conservatives are the true liberals) refuse to criticize misogyny in the Islamic world because multiculturalism trumps feminism. Also, slamming non-Western misogyny does not further the left’s primary agenda, which is tearing down Western civilization.
