Loyola Marymount University is hosting an on-campus Planned Parenthood fundraiser Friday, sponsored by LMU Women in Politics, a registered student organization at the university, according to a description posted on the university website’s event calendar.
“The Planned Parenthood Fundraiser is an opportunity for us to raise money for a cause we really care about and have fun at the same time!” reads the post. Who knew that raising money to murder the unborn could be such a blast?
Loyola Marymount, a private Catholic college in Los Angeles founded by the Jesuit and Marymount orders, has refused to cancel the event despite protests from concerned Catholics and alumni, trying to claim that the events, actions, and positions of student organizations “are not endorsed by the University.”
LMU Women in Politics describes itself thusly on its website: “We strive for a strong emphasis on intersectional feminism. We are committed to making racial justice and LGBTQ+ women, gender queer, and non binary individuals a priority in our fight.”
Loyola Marymount alumna Samantha Stephenson said she was “heartbroken, sad, disappointed, and angry” after learning of the event. She has organized an online petition urging LMU President Timothy Law Snyder to stop the fundraiser, calling it an “egregious violation of LMU’s Jesuit, Catholic identity,” which indeed it is.
