Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has deleted the controversial tweets that sparked accusations of anti-Semitism.
In 2012 Omar claimed on Twitter that Israel had “hypnotized the world” about the Jewish state’s ongoing conflict with Palestinians. Later she incurred more accusations of anti-Semitism by suggesting that the GOP’s support of Israel is bought, tweeting that its stance is “all about the Benjamins.” She later falsely named AIPAC as a group that pays pro-Israel politicians.
Omar ultimately issued an apology: “We have to always be willing to step back and think through criticism, just as I expect people to hear me when others attack me for my identity. This is why I unequivocally apologize.”
