During a joint press conference with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was “a great day for New York City” and “an extraordinary day for Queens” after news broke that Amazon had chosen Long Island City as one of the sites for its second headquarters, HQ2.
De Blasio also touted the scale of the HQ2 project, which he said “blows away anything we’ve ever seen.” New York has offered more than $1.5 billion in tax breaks if Amazon hits certain employment targets.
On the other hand, De Blasio, who said in 2017 that he’s never purchased anything from Amazon, said on Tuesday that he will continue to boycott the company for its “very destructive” impact on communities.
