Cummings’ Widow Will Run for His Congressional Seat

November 12, 2019

As expected, Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, widow of the late Rep. Elijah Cummings, has announced she will run for his empty Congressional seat.

“I’m going to run this race and I’m going to run it hard, as if he’s still right here by my side,” Mrs. Cummings told the Baltimore Sun, according to Breitbart News. Her husband, who had represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District since 1996, passed away at the age of 68 on October 17.

“I am a fighter. I don’t shy away from the label,” she stated. “I will continue to press on and fight. I will fight the Trump administration, which is trying to undermine the social safety net.” Prior to Elijah’s death, Trump had sparred with him on social media for allowing his Baltimore district to decay into rat-infested poverty.

Rockeymoore Cummings will face competition from at least three Republicans and eight other Democrats for the seat in a special election scheduled for April 28. The winner will complete Cumming’s term, which ends in January 2021.
