Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) grilled Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Tuesday about the administration’s failure to guard the nation’s border or reduce attacks on economic migrants as they travel towards the partly-open border.
After noting that illegal immigration into the United States was at a nearly 50-year low under former President Trump, Cruz quoted the open-borders enthusiast and social justice activist Mayorkas as saying that the border was “broken.”
“But you broke it,” Cruz told Mayorkas, who admitted in response to a direct question about the number of illegal aliens crossing our southern border since Joe Biden has been in office that it is “an historic high.”
Mayorkas repeatedly attempted to dodge Cruz’s pointed questions, claiming ludicrously at one point that “I’m not familiar with the term ‘cages’” — to which Cruz responded that they were secure facilities Mayorkas built to hold children and then attempted to block media access to the “Biden cages.”
Leftist Chairman Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) set a time limit for each round of questioning, making it easier for Mayorkas to dodge the questions.
