Sunday marked the fifth anniversary of the Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram‘s kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls in the Nigerian town of Chibok, which launched the #BringBackOurGirls social media campaign. More than 100 remain missing.
The United Nations Children’s Fund said the number of children Boko Haram has kidnapped and killed is likely much higher. ” In addition to these children, last year, 432 children were killed and maimed, 180 were abducted, and 43 girls were sexually abused in this conflict-wracked part of the Lake Chad region.”
The group has been waging attacks in the country since 2009.
