Biden Unity Fail: Poll Shows 82% Still Think U.S. is Divided

April 27, 2021

The vast majority of U.S. adults still believe the country is divided, despite President Joe Biden’s vow to bring Americans together, according to an NBC News poll released Sunday.

“To overcome these challenges — to restore the soul and to secure the future of America — requires more than words. It requires the most elusive of things in a democracy: unity. Unity,” Biden had said during his January 20 address. He added that his “whole soul” was wholly devoted to “bringing America together,” “uniting our people,” and “uniting our nation.”

In the very same speech, Biden lamented what he described as “the rise of political extremism, white supremacy, [and] domestic terrorism” in the United States, by which he meant supporters of his opponent Donald Trump.

Somewhere in the nearly 100 intervening days since then (namely Day One), Biden’s promise went off the rails. The NBC poll revealed that only a little more than a third, or 36%, say the country is now headed in the “right direction.” By contrast, a whopping 82% of respondents believe the country is divided.

Only 82%? Who are the deluded or uninformed 18% who think the country is moving forward together?
