AOC: Celebrate Juneteenth With Committee to Study Reparations

June 19, 2020

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) wrote Friday on Twitter that the U.S. should celebrate Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S., by enacting Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s legislation forming a commission to study proposals for reparations.

“Happy #Juneteenth!” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “To celebrate, let’s pass legislation that makes Juneteenth a national holiday and enact H.R. 40, Rep @JacksonLeeTX18’s Commission on Reparations.”

Jackson Lee’s “Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act” would establish a commission to explore the possibilities of compensating descendants of slaves in the U.S., spanning from 1619 to the present day and “recommend appropriate remedies.”

The appropriate remedy is to abandon the absurd notion of reparations for slavery. Besides the utter impossibility of fairly determining who should receive reparations and from whom, such a policy would only exacerbate the racial division in this country which Democrats have incited for decades.
