Additional Information on Ingrid Newkirk

Overview

* A strict vegan, Newkirk refrains from eating any animal product. If humans are going to consume animal flesh, she reasons, they should eat whales: “You can get thousands and thousands of meals out of a whale, so you wouldn’t be killing and torturing so many of them.”

* In 2005 two PETA employees were arrested and charged with cruelty to animals after they had illegally euthanized a number of dogs and cats, stuffed them into sacks, and thrown them into a garbage bin adjacent to a convenience store. At a subsequent press conference, Newkirk justified the killings, statingthat “euthanasia is the kindest gift to a dog or cat unwanted and unloved. [It is] the only loving touch they have ever felt.”

* Newkirk has authored a number of books, including: Save the Animals! 101 Easy Things You Can Do (1990); The Compassionate Cook: Please Don’t Eat The Animals (1993); You Can Save the Animals: 251 Simple Ways to Stop Thoughtless Cruelty and Free the Animals! (1999); Animal Rights Weekend Warrior (2003); Making Kind Choices (2004); 50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals (2006); One Can Make a Difference: How Simple Actions Can Change the World (2009); and The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights(2009). She has also produced two DVDs: Speaking Up For the Animals(2004), and I Am an Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA (2007).
