Additional Information on Ernie Chambers

Overview

* Ernie Chambers made unsuccessful bids for governor of Nebraska in 1974 and 1994, for state attorney general in 1982, and for the U.S. Senate in 1988. (In that ’88 campaign, he ran on the New Alliance Party ticket.)

* Since the 1980s, Senator Chambers has maintained that NCAA student athletes should be considered state employees — on grounds that they generate a great deal of revenue for their universities without any legal or financial benefits for doing so. This arrangement, he says, creates an environment that encourages the athletes to secretly accept illegal payments and gifts.

* In September 2007, Chambers objected when a number of his colleagues in the Nebraska State Legislature sought to limit the filing of frivolous lawsuits. “The Constitution requires that the courthouse doors be open,” said Chambers, “so you cannot prohibit the filing of suits. Anyone can sue anyone they choose, even God.” To drive the point home, Chambers filed a suit seeking a permanent injunction to prevent God from permitting or causing “fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues, ferocious famines, devastating droughts, genocidal wars, birth defects and the like.” A Douglas County, Nebraska district court judge threw out the suit, saying there was no evidence that the defendant had been served.
