* Muslim cleric
* “Whoever is killed [while carrying out a suicide bombing mission] is a martyr, [and] may Allah bless him with high esteem.”
* Died in December 2009

Sheikh Faysal Mawlawi was born in 1941 in Tripoli, Lebanon. A leader of the European Council for Fatwa Research, he was a Muslim cleric known for his support of Palestinian suicide bombings as a legitimate form of “resistance” against Israel. Mawlawi issued a fatwa (religious legal ruling) following a Palestinian suicide bombing in Israel that killed forty people, including four Americans. His fatwa asserted that “martyrdom operations are not suicide [which Islam purportedly prohibits] and should not be deemed as unjustifiable means of endangering one’s life.” “Whoever is killed in such missions is a martyr,” said Mawlawi, “[and] may Allah bless him with high esteem.”

Mawlawi died in December 2009 in Tripoli.
