* Founded the Worker’s World Party
* Died on February 1, 1998

Sam Marcy was born in Russia in 1911, seven years before the start of the Russian Civil War. When he was a child, his family moved to Brooklyn, where he became a member of the Young Communist League (the youth movement of the Communist Party) and ultimately a labor lawyer. In his younger years, Marcy opposed Stalinism and subscribed instead to Trotskyism. He founded the Buffalo, New York branch of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) in the 1940s. Over time, however, he became a devoted Stalinist.

In 1958, Marcy and his followers broke away from, or were exiled from, the SWP when the latter took a public stand against the Soviet invasion of Hungary. Marcy, by contrast, supported the invasion. A year later, he founded the Worker’s World Party (WWP), a Leninist organization advocating the violent overthrow of America’s capitalist society. Under Marcy’s leadership, the WWP has supported every Communist and Socialist regime, including those of Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong IlMoamar Khaddafi, Slobodan Milosevic, Ho Chi Minh, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Tse Tung. Marcy and the WWP also supported the Sandinista Marxists in Nicaragua, and Communist China’s violent reaction to the Tiananmen Square protests for democracy in 1989 which, by some accounts, resulted in the deaths of over 2,000 individuals. Because of its endorsement of terrorist groups, leaders, and nations, the FBI has declared the WWP a “potential threat in the United States.” A rabid hater of the United States, Marcy himself led early demonstrations against American intervention in Vietnam and called for a Vietcong victory (the “Vietcong” were the agents of North Vietnam’s Communist regime whose official name was the National Liberation Front (NLF).) The WWP opposes every stance and action taken by the United States in the War on Terror.

“What constitutes the Evil Empire?” asked Sam Marcy in his 1990 article, “The Evil Empire at Work.” “It is the unholy alliance of big oil, the multinational corporations, the military-industrial complex, the big banks, and the capitalist government which undeviatingly act as their willing servants.”

Marcy was a prolific writer who frequently addressed issues such as the conflict in the Middle East and the first Gulf War. Of Palestinian terrorists, Marcy said, “Their experience in the fires of revolution has prepared them for the task of building a socialist society.”

Marcy died on February 1, 1998 in New York City.
