Abduragak Abubakar Janjalani was born in 1959 in Basilan, Philippines. He was the founder of Abu Sayyaf, an Islamic militant organization based in the Philippines with heavy connections to Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. Janjalani, who was a vereran of the Islamic mujahideen movement fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, was killed in a firefight with Philippine police in 1998. His younger brother was Khadafy Janjalani, who was killed in an encounter with government troops on September 4, 2006.
