Additional Information on Jeff Halper

* In 2006 the American Friends Service Committee nominated Halper and ISM co-founder Ghassan Andoni for the Nobel Peace Prize — in recognition of their work “to liberate both the Palestinian and the Israeli people from the yoke of structural violence” and “to build equality between their people by recognizing and celebrating their common humanity.”

* Halper is a member of the support committee of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, a mock court that investigates “the violations of international law perpetrated against the Palestinian people.”

* In March of 2010, Halper was a keynote speaker at Israel Apartheid Week in Glasgow. Halper’s lecture was entitled “Israeli Apartheid: The Case For BDS,” during which he described the way that Palestinians are ‘warehoused’ in Gaza.

* Halper has said: “We use the South African analogy a lot because we argue that Israel has developed a system of Apartheid. And you can define Apartheid by two elements: one is the separation, which is what Apartheid means, when one population separates itself from the other. Second is when that population then creates a regime of permanent institutionalised domination over the other, strategically, institutionally, structurally, and that’s certainly what you have in Israel.”

* Halper has said: “We are against the Israeli policy of occupation and displacement. If you create an apartheid situation, if you lock another people into prison, in the end, you cannot develop a healthy, normal, and prosperous society. The Occupation, conflict, terrorism, and settlements all affects the Israeli society and economy. As long as the Occupation continues, Israel itself cannot be free.”

* Halper spent ten years as a community volunteer in the inner-city neighborhoods of Jerusalem; he was a founder of Ohel, a social protest movement of working-class Mizrahi Jews; and he once chaired the Israeli Association for Ethiopian Jews.

* Halper has also served on the steering committee of the United Nations Conference on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.
