Larry Holmes is a member of the Secretariat of the Workers World Party (WWP), a Marxist-Leninist sect that was the sponsor and organizer of the major national demonstrations against the war in Iraq. Founded in 1959, the WWP is one of the most important organizations on the left. This group idolizes the former Soviet dictator and mass murderer Joseph Stalin and regards Fidel Castro as a hero of the common man. It has supported the Soviet invasions of Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan, as well as the regimes of Slobodan Milocevic in the former Yugoslavia and Kim Jong Il in North Korea - notwithstanding the barbarous atrocities and human rights violations they have committed. In the 1960s, the WWP called for the victory of the Vietcong over American troops in the Vietnam War.
Holmes has run for U.S. President twice on the WWP ticket. In 1972 he served time in a military prison and was then thrown out of the U.S. Army because he was actively organizing resistance to the Vietnam War, He was once involved with the American Servicemen Union, which has tried to unionize American military personnel. Along with Brian Becker, Holmes co-founded the WWP front-group International ANSWER, an anti-war, anti-American, anti-Israel, anti-capitalist organization.
During a speech at the December 5, 1998 Communist Manifesto conference, Holmes said, "We can no longer talk about the illusion of benevolent capitalism. As a matter of fact, Alan Greenspan, the chair of the Federal Reserve, said in a recent speech that governments and businesses are finding it harder and harder to exercise a 'caring' capitalism when they want to compete in a global market. So call it what you will - globalization, neo-liberalism, Guiliani-ism [a reference to New York City's Republican then-mayor, Rudolph Giuliani]. It's war on the working class and the oppressed. The system is beyond reform. Not only is it the cause of unimaginable misery, social devastation, imperialist war, and a threat to the planet's ecology. As long as capitalism is around, society cannot progress. Capitalism is a brake on the progress of civilization."
Holmes also created another WWP front group, Millions for Mumia, which stands in the vanguard of the movement to exonerate convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu Jamal, whom Holmes has called "our revolutionary brother still facing death."
With regard to foreign affairs, Holmes has been an opponent of Israel and the American aid it receives. Conversely, he has expressed admiration for the combative spirit of Palestinian terrorists.
