Books on Islam, Jihad, Sharia, & Terrorism

Overview

This section of resources is divided into several categories. The category titled “Islam” features materials that examine the basic tenets of the faith — not Islamic “fundamentalism,” “extremism,” “fanaticism,” “Islamo-fascism,” or “Islamism,” but rather, Islam in its orthodox form as it has been understood and explained Muslim scholars since the founding of their religion.

The category titled “Radical Islam, Jihad, Islamo-Fascism, & Terrorism” provides a list of texts that examine the ways in which Islam, throughout its history, has often found expression in acts of intolerance, hatred, and violent aggression. Particularly noteworthy is the Muslim tradition of jihad, which seeks to spread the faith by means of coercion or force across the infidel world. Devout Muslims who take part in this endeavor view themselves as foot soldiers in a sacred mission; by contrast, non-believers who are victimized by such people view them as terrorists.

The category titled “Sharia” features resources that explain the detailed system of Islamic Law that was initially developed by Muslim scholars in the first three centuries of Islam and remains in force among fundamentalists today.
