* Gutierrez’s book publications include the following:

  • El Politico: The Mexican American Elected Official (1972)
  • A Gringo Manual on How to Handle Mexicans (1974; revised and expanded in 2001, 2003)
  • A War of Words (co-authored, 1985)
  • The Making of a Chicano Militant: Lessons from Cristal (1998)
  • The Making of a Civil Rights Leader: José Angel Gutiérrez(autobiography, 2005)
  • We Won’t Back Down: Severita Lara’s Rise from Student Leader to Mayor (2005)
  • Chicanas in Charge: Texas Women in the Public Arena. (Co-authored, 2007)

* Gutierrez did post-doctoral work at Stanford University, Colegio de México, the University of Washington, and Centro de Estudios Económicos y Sociales del Tercer Mundo in Mexico City, Mexico.

* In 1984 Gutierrez ran unsuccessfully for Oregon State Representative.

* Gutierrez founded or co-founded the Mexican American Unity Council, Ciudadanos Unidos, Obreros Unidos Independientes, Becas Para Aztlan, the Northwest Voter Registration and Education Project, and Grupo de Apoyo para Inmigrantes Latino Americanos.

* At one time, Gutierrez headed the Greater Dallas Foundation.

* Gutierrez has been involved with the International Convention of Mexicans living in the Exterior.
