* In 1970 Mitchell married Gil Jackson, a black man who worked in the public affairs department at the pharmaceutical company Smith, Kline & French. She divorced him five years later. Since 1997 Mitchell has been married to Alan Greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve of the United States. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg performed the couple’s wedding ceremony.

Mitchell’s Views on the Trump Administration

* In April 2017, Mitchell described the Trump administration as the most dishonest she had ever seen: “It is totally sui generis…. I have never seen anything like this where people just flat-out lie. You know, black is white and white is black, and they mislead you. It’s really disconcerting to see the podium in the White House briefing room being used to mislead or misdirect or obfuscate.”

Mitchell Levies Charges of Sexism

* In April 2014, Mitchell accused former NSA and CIA director Michael Hayden of sexism, based on the fact that Hayden had criticized a report in which the Senate Intelligence Committee – which was chaired by Senator Dianne Feinstein – condemned the interrogation of terror suspects under the Bush administration. Specifically, Mitchell objected to Hayden’s assertion that the report reflected a “deep emotional feeling on the part of the Senator [Feinstein]” but lacked objectivity. By Mitchell’s calculus, Hayden’s comments betrayed his belief that women were typically long on emotion, but short on logic. Mitchell also complained about “how men criticize women in power” generally.

* In a May 2017 interview with Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price regarding a Republican bill designed to reform Obamacare, Mitchell complained that even though “women’s health issues arguably are going to be disproportionately affected,” the people who were present “at the … celebration” of the bill’s passage were “mostly all men and white men at that. There was no diversity there.” Mitchell subsequently complained that Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had “appointed 13 men, male senators, as a task force to rewrite the bill, including none of the Republican women senators.”

Mitchell Badgers Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu

* In an October 2014 interview with Benjamin Netanyahu, three times Mitchell asked the Israeli Prime Minister to address the Obama administration’s claim “that the new settlements in Arab East Jerusalem undercut your [Netanyahu’s] commitment to peace,” “could poison the [political] atmosphere” with the Palestinians, and “could turn the world against you.” Each time Natanyahu refuted the claim, Mitchell repeated it and asked him to comment on it.
