Inside Bin Laden's Head

Terrorists are not provoked by American actions or policies as the so-caled 'liberals' would like us to believe--they are inspired by what they see as American weakness. Here’s what Osama bin-Laden has to say on the subject in his last (1998) interview with an American journalist. (Thanks to Free Republic for keeping this available even as ABC News no longer posts it. Quotes are from the original ABC News interview.)

Beirut
“We have seen in the last decade the decline of the American government and the weakness of the American soldier who is ready to wage Cold Wars and unprepared to fight long wars. This was proven in Beirut when the Marines fled after two explosions. It also proves they can run in less than 24 hours, and this was also repeated in Somalia.”

Afghanistan: Mujahideen defeat one superpower, they can defeat the other
“After Allah honored us with victory in Afghanistan, and justice prevailed and the killing of those who slaughtered millions of Muslims in the Muslim republics, it cleared from Muslim minds the myth of superpowers. The youth ceased from seeing America as a superpower."

Somalia
"After leaving Afghanistan they headed for Somalia and prepared for a long battle, thinking that the Americans were like the Russians, but they were surprised when the Americans entered with 30,000 troops, and collected more troops from the world — 5,000 from Pakistan, 5,000 from India, 5,000 from Bangladesh, 5,000 from Egypt, Senegal and others like Saudi Arabia.”

"The youth were surprised at the low morale of the American soldiers and realized more than before that the America soldiers are paper tigers. After a few blows, they ran in defeat and America forgot about all the hoopla and media propaganda after leaving the Gulf War and destroying infrastructure — and destroying baby formula factories, all civilian factories, bridges and dams that help planting food — about being the world leader, and the leader of the new world order. After a few blows, (in Mogadishu) they forgot about this title and left, dragging their corpses and their shameful defeat and stopped using such titles. And they learned in America that this name is larger then them.”

Mujahideen stronger than NATO: destroyed USSR
“NATO, that America created, we know it spent $455 billion American dollars in improving weaponry to protect Europe and America from Russia, and they did not fire a single shot. Allah stood with the Muslims, the Afghani mujahideen, and those who fought with them from other Muslim countries. We fought against the Russians and the Soviet Union until, not to say we defeated them, but Allah defeated them, they became nonexistent. There is a lesson to learn from this for he who wishes to learn. The Soviet Union entered in the last week of 1979, in December, and with Allah's help their flag was folded Dec. 25 a few years later and thrown in the trash, and there was nothing left to call Soviet Union.”

Al-Qaeda is not a political movement of any type. It is a means of grabbing power and wealth for its leaders.

While al Qaeda chops heads and kills Iraqi babies, bin Laden revels in watching American liberals blame Bush for scuffing up a few Korans and "torturing" Gitmo al-Qaeda detainees by forcing them to eat MREs in air conditioned rooms with bright lights and rock and roll music. It proves to him that we are weak and decadent and can be destroyed, just as he believes he destroyed the other superpower. Bin-Laden actually believes he can rule the world.

Right now, it's not looking good for us.

That is something Europe needs to decide on now, if it is not too late already.

Bin Laden's calumniation,

“After Allah honored us with victory in Afghanistan, and justice prevailed and the killing of those who slaughtered millions of Muslims in the Muslim republics, it cleared from Muslim minds the myth of superpowers. The youth ceased from seeing America as a superpower."

My My, aren't we a cocky, and forgetful son of mahound! All puffed up with his putrid Arab mubalagha and tawkid!

He forgets about the Reagan administration’s support for the mujahideen (holy warriors).

Reagan was determined to make Afghanistan the Soviet Vietnam, and he did this by taking away the Soviet's "high ground advantage." In 1986 he provided the mujahideen with portable surface-to-air Stinger missiles, which proved devastatingly effective in increasing Soviet air losses (particularly helicopters).

The war in Afghanistan cost the United States about $1 billion per annum in aid to the mujahideen; it cost the Soviet Union eight times as much, helping bankrupt its economy.

Number of Americans killed on American soil by the Soviet Union that Reagan opposed: 0.

Number of Americans killed on American soil by the mujahideen that Reagan supported, and used our tax dollars to arm: Over two thousand.

Other governments which received military assistance from the Reagan administration: Saddam Hussein's government in Iraq; the Ayatollah's government in Iran (the latter despite laws against it).

The neocons' war against Iraq is bankrupting our economy, just as the communists' war in Afghanistan aided in bankrupting theirs. Come to think of it, many of those neocons are the same Reaganistas who thought helping bin Laden and Saddam Hussein in the 1980s was a good idea.

Conclusion:

The paleoconservatives and libertarians have the right idea on American foreign policy. The neocons have demonstrated their gross incompetence. At 10:30 am on September 10, 2001, one neocon at my (former) college praised Reagan's funding of bin Laden and company. Less than 24 hours later, the twin towers no longer stood. Why should we accept the recommendations of moonbats like the neocons?

--------

We should also add that many of AndrewWalden's quotes seem to be fabrications. A number of them don't appear in the Free Republic post (including the ones about Beirut); they don't appear in the PBS Frontline post, either.

One truly can hope that Bin Laden is delivered up to the West in the near future so he can occupy a cell on death row next to Saddam.
One futher can wish for the failure of the Bin Laden family, fattened on oil revenue, not unlike Spain fattened on the gold and silver of the new world which ultimately made it lazy and second rate.

So your point Sammy, based on what you wrote, is that Dutch should have had a fortune teller on his payrole!

Your statistics prove nothing other than that it is possible to accept isolationist fantasy and from that standpoint form facile comparisons.

Reagan was correct to face down the Soviets, despite some short- and long-term costs of makeshift alliances. At the very worst, it was arguable policy which history will sort out, for which we take responsibility.

But that policy played at most a tiny role in creating the threats that have arisen in the intervening era: a multi-faceted plague with its roots in Islamic failure: theocrats, thugocrats, Islamist terrorism.

I agree with the original post - it is our weakness that emboldens them. However, the original motivation comes from only one place. Regardless of what we do right or wrong, they see us as the enemy.
